We can all agree the Deutschlandticket is a hit. But Bavaria’s student-friendly deal is the real budget crush… the (formerly) “29-euro ticket,” now the Bavarian Discount Ticket for 2026.

Living costs are high, especially on a student budget. That’s why Bavaria subsidises a cheaper version of the Deutschlandticket for students, trainees (Azubis) and volunteers (FSJ/BFD). Below, we explain who qualifies, how to buy it, what it costs in 2026, and the fine print.

Bookmark this guide, we keep it updated for price changes and eligibility rules.

💡 Quick Vocab Note: The Student Deutschlandticket / “29 Euro Ticket” is officially the Bavarian Discount Ticket (Ermäßigungsticket)

What Is The Student Deutschlandticket / Bavarian Discount Ticket?

The Bavarian Discount Ticket is a reduced-price Deutschlandticket for students, trainees and volunteers in Bavaria. It works just like the standard D-Ticket (unlimited local/regional travel nationwide), but at a subsidised monthly price when you verify eligibility.

2026 price: €43/month (D-Ticket base price is €63/month). Read our D-Ticket guide for what’s included/excluded.

Who Is Eligible For The Student Deutschlandticket?

Eligibility: enrolled students, trainees (Azubi), volunteers (FSJ/BFD) in Bavaria

You must be enrolled at a Bavarian university/college or be a trainee (Azubi) or volunteer (FSJ/BFD) in Bavaria. You’ll need to provide proof of status (uni login or document upload) and re-verify each semester (students) or annually (Azubis/volunteers).

Tip: LMU/TUM/HM and most Bavarian institutions support online verification via Shibboleth in M-Login.

Where Can It Be Used?

Where the Bavarian Discount Ticket applies: local & regional networks nationwide

Exactly like the Deutschlandticket: valid on all local & regional transport nationwide (U/S-Bahn, tram, bus, RB/RE). Not valid on ICE/IC/EC, FlixTrain/FlixBus, or 1st-class sections.

When Is It Available?

Availability timing by semester for Bavarian Discount Ticket

Ongoing in 2026 as a monthly subscription. Students typically (re)activate each semester once their uni login for the new term is enabled; Azubis/volunteers renew annually with the official form/contract upload.

Where Can I Buy It?

Where to buy: MVG/MVV portals, DB Navigator, partner sales

Order via your local transport partner (e.g., MVG/MVV with M-Login) or via DB Navigator, selecting the Bayerisches Ermäßigungsticket. Some university pages list preferred sales partners for their campus.

How To Switch From An Existing D-Ticket

How to switch subscription from standard D-Ticket to Bavarian Discount Ticket

Cancel your standard D-Ticket with your provider by the 10th of the month for end-of-month termination, then order the Bavarian Discount Ticket with your uni login/proof. It doesn’t auto-convert at semester start.

Additional Details About Price, Form & Renewal

Bavarian Discount Ticket: price and renewal overview

2026 price: €43/month (base D-Ticket is €63). Students re-verify every semester; Azubis/volunteers yearly. If you miss re-verification, the provider will end the contract and you’ll need to re-order.

In What Form Do I Get It?

As a mobile ticket (MVGO, DB Navigator, etc.) or a chip card (allow extra processing time). Mobile is fastest and easiest to replace if you change phones.

Is It Transferable?

No. Like the standard Deutschlandticket, it’s personalised and non-transferable.

How Do I Cancel?

It’s a monthly subscription. Cancel with your provider by the 10th of the month to stop at month-end. If you need it for only one month, order and cancel before the 10th to avoid an extra month.

How Do I Buy It If I Don’t Have A German Bank Account?

This monthly subscription-based ticket provides all the advantages of budget travelling in Germany, except that it must be paid by an automatic debit from a German bank account, or an IBAN.

However, after we’ve found a great (and FREE) solution to this for those without a European or German bank account: The multi-currency account app Wise!
